From the President, Winter 2021

Welcome to Term 3 and the JLTAV Winter Newsletter. After a busy Term 2, I hope you enjoyed a well-deserved holiday break and you continue to stay safe and well during these challenging times.

In May, we held our first online conference. The program ran from Saturday 1 May to Saturday 8 May. Sessions were held at different times to enable flexibility for colleagues to attend sessions around their other commitments. The program was varied and included sessions focusing on: ICT/innovation, VCE, secondary, primary and curriculum/assessment. We also offered two keynote presentations from Andrew Fuller and Matt Miller. Many thanks to our colleagues for their generosity in putting their presentations together and for sharing their wealth of knowledge with us. Thank you also to our colleagues from Victoria and further afield for supporting the conference and attending online.

Our professional learning focus for Term 3 will be in ICT. We plan to run sessions over a few weeks in August and September. Colleagues are able to choose the sessions that interest them. Each session will run for an hour from 7.00pm. For the first half an hour, the presenter will introduce the digital tool. In the second part of the session, colleagues are able to work independently and trial the tool. The presenter will remain online and colleagues are welcome to come back in the main session and ask any questions. These sessions are free to JLTAV members. Colleagues may choose to attend one session or all sessions. The registration form for this professional learning is below.

This year we will continue to run our Year 12 Morning online and make the resources available to our members for free via Google Drive. This includes a recording of the information that would usually be presented on the day of the event. During Term 3 we will inform teachers when the materials will be ready, how to access them, and for how long access will be available. In order to receive the link to these materials, please complete the form here:

Please register your school once only. Materials will be made available to JLTAV members only. We wish all Year 12 students success as preparations for their end-of-year exams intensify in Term 3.

To further support VCE teachers we have developed a practice exam. This is available for purchase by JLTAV members and non-JLTAV members. The exam package costs $100 (JLTAV member) and $170 (non-JLTAV member) and includes:

  • An electronic copy of the practice exam
  • An answer key with suggested marks for each question (electronic copy)
  • Listening tracks sent via email

Please note that the practice exam materials produced by the JLTAV have not been endorsed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

The exam will be ready for distribution mid-term 3.

Over the past few years we have held a highly successful immersion weekend. This is the perfect opportunity for non-native teachers of Japanese to focus on developing and extending their Japanese language skills in an immersive environment with native speaker mentors. This year’s event will be held from Friday 22 October to Sunday 24 October at Lilydale Lakeside Conferencing and Events Centre. It will be great to hold the event at a location that is close to Melbourne. Given the uncertainty around when international borders will open and travel between Australia and Japan will resume, the immersion weekend will be the perfect opportunity to feel like we are in Japan. The weekend is open to all language level abilities and details of this professional learning activity can be found in this newsletter. Sincere thanks to our 2021 native speaker mentors: Yuichi Deguchi, Takanori Hayakawa and Junko Nichols. The registration form for this professional learning is below.

Our highly successful Calligraphy Competition will again be held during Term 3. The details of this competition are included in this newsletter. We have also included details of our online Junior Speech Competition in this newsletter and on the JLTAV website.

Term 3 is the time when secondary students make decisions regarding their subject choices for the following year. As a way to support teachers during this time, links to advocacy resources have been included on the JLTAV website. We hope you find these resources useful.

As an Association we promote the sharing of teaching ideas, and in this newsletter we have included some activity pages. If you have a resource(s) you would like to share, please email it to Perhaps you have some great resources you leave for CRTs, especially non-Japanese speaking CRTs. We hope these resources will be useful as we move into the second half of the year.

The JLTAV Committee continue to work hard to organise events throughout the year and I thank them for all their hard work, generosity and commitment to the Association. Contact details of the 2021 committee have been included in this newsletter.

I wish everyone a successful Term 3 and thank you for your support of the JLTAV Inc. Take care and stay safe in this current environment.
